Dissection Choice

We feel that students in kindergarten through grade twelve should have the choice to opt out of animal dissections with no grade reduction in the course. We would like Michigan to have a law that protects all students from unfair penalties for not choosing to participate in animal dissections and that requires teachers to provide alternative choices to cutting into animal specimens.

The Michigan Educational Assessment Program

We propose a $500 reduction in the amount of the scholarship, making the scholarship worth $2000. In addition to the reduction, we have devised a plan to change the current distribution system. Instead, the $2000 scholarship will be awarded in annual payments of $500 to students who maintain 3.0 GPA or better. If a GPA of 3.0 or better (or comparable marks from a trade/vocational school) is not maintained, the scholarship will be revoked without reinstatement.

Standard School Starting Time

We propose that there be a standard school starting time put in place. We suggest switching the starting times of high school and elementary schools. It is a proven fact that high school aged students need more sleep than elementary aged students. Teenagers cram their days with homework, sports, and part-time jobs. They stay up late doing homework and wake up too early.
