Markman, Stephen

Justice Markman was appointed as the 103rd Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court in 1999 and re-elected in 2000. Prior to that, he served as Judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals. Before being appointed to the Court, Justice Markman practiced law with the firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone in Detroit. From 1989-93, he served as United States Attorney in Michigan, where he was responsible for one of the largest federal prosecutor's offices in the country and received national attention for his efforts in combating violent street crime and public corruption. He has also served as Assistant Attorney General of the United States, and he headed the Justice Department's Office of Legal Policy. He also served as Chief Counsel of the United States Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution, and as the Deputy Chief Counsel of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee, for seven years.

McBrien, Marcia

Public Information Officer of the Michigan Supreme Court
Marcia McBrien is the Public Information Officer of the Michigan Supreme Court. Her responsibilities include communicating with the public and the media on behalf of Michigan's judicial branch. She is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and has a law degree from the University of Michigan. She has worked as an attorney, journalist, publicist, and teacher.

Weaver, Betty

Justice Weaver was elected as Leelanau County probate and juvenile judge in 1974, to the Court of Appeals in 1986 and 1992, and in 1994 and 2002 to the Supreme Court (serving as Chief Justice from January 1999 to January 2001). She has been a judge for more than 27 years. She has served on the Governor's Task Force for Children's Justice on Child Abuse and Neglect, and the Committee on Juvenile Justice. Also, for her work in juvenile justice, Justice Weaver has appeared on Good Morning America and in People magazine. She was voted "Jurist of the Year" by the Police Officers Association of Michigan in 1999, and in 2000, she received the Governor's Lifetime Achievement Award for Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention.
