- Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods.
- Answer the poll question using evidence to support their opinion.
- Understand the law being considered.
Resources:
- One label from each student (ask the students a day or so beforehand to bring in a nutritional label from something they eat).
- Labels from the school cafeteria.

Set Activity:
- Students will tell what they ate for lunch and then discuss which foods are healthy and unhealthy foods in their opinion in a classroom discussion format.
- Read/explain bill to class.
Instructional Activities:
- Students will categorize nutritional labels based on established criteria listed in the proposed bill (in a simpler form for them to understand). This will be done in 3-4 groups.
- Class discussion/teacher lecture on the effects of eating healthy vs. unhealthy foods.
- Review the amount of calories and fat on the labels in comparison to recommended daily intakes.
Assessment of Student Learning:
- Students will answer the poll question in 2-3 sentences giving their opinion and information to support it.
- Brief explanation of freedom of choice needed to prep for essay.
